This blog has been created to give ideas and insights on using this video for your upcoming IslandWood experience!

All field groups at IslandWood will be exploring Blakely Harbor and almost all schools begin their IslandWood adventure with a ride on the ferry. This video helps children to think about what is going on under the water’s surface!

Here students can get exposure to such vocabulary terms as: food chain, life cycle, producers, consumers, decomposers, ecosystem, and phytoplankton.

Watch this video and then read on for other great ideas on how you can use this educational tool in your classroom!

Classroom Application Ideas

- Before watching the video, have your class brainstorm what they think is going on below the surface of the Puget Sound. Then, watch the video and discuss differences and similarities.

- Watch the video with the volume off. Have the students guess as to what they think the video is about. Then, watch the video again with the volume on and see how their predictions compare!

- Use the video as an introductory exploration of ecosystems and/or watersheds.

- After watching the video, have the children collage/paint/draw different interconnections between the organisms seen in the video.
